世界標準の変化は国際市場のシェアに大きな影響を与える。GSMの普及により、アメリカのメーカーはシェアを落とし、ほとんどのヨーロッパのメーカーはシェアを拡大させた。ヨーロッパには、情報・家電・半導体産業において、強いメーカーがなく、ヨーロッパの市場はアメリカや日本の企業に席巻されると多くのヨーロッパ人が考えていたが、GSMの普及により免れた。(pp.424-426)
